Olive is a 20 year old affectionate, intelligent, gentle bird. She has a sense of mischief and humor. In addition to a few words and phrases she makes clicking, whistling and kissing sounds. She spends time outdoors, always closely supervised. She does not necessarily have to go outside but she should not be caged during the day, unless her caregiver/companion needs to leave the house for a period of time. She is used to climbing and sitting on and in her cage and on a perch on a stand next to her cage. Olive wants to have someone within visual range when she is active. She needs affection, stimulation and interaction periodically during the day. She can climb down onto the floor and walk around, and people need to be attentive and aware of this. She does not do this constantly. She is used to taking a “nap” for a couple of hours during the day—locked n her cage and in a quiet room or area by herself. If her quiet time goes on for too long she will let you know with loud cockatoo screams. At first she will be more quiet and subdued in a new environment but she will become more animated and interact more as she becomes comfortable and familiar with her surroundings. She goes to bed around 8 pm in spring and summer and earlier as daylight lessens in fall and winter—pretty much in synch with daylight and dusk and darkness. She is quiet through the night from when she goes down until her cage is uncovered in the morning. This has been about 9 am, but she is adaptable to an earlier time. Sometimes she can be heard moving around, doing things in her cage but she doesn’t vocalize at night. She is used to being covered at night and alone in a room. She likes a routine but she is adaptable to change.
