Don’t breed, don’t buy... adopt a rescued bird!

Many have forgotten this truth, but you must not forget it.
You remain responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.

UPDATE -- Please READ!

Mickaboo has had to suspend intake of cockatiels, despite the high numbers of birds needing refuge. We have been taking in cockatiels at an unprecedented rate and we simply have no more foster homes available. As you may know, Mickaboo has no permanent facility. Incoming birds go into homes of our trained volunteers where they are cared for until a permanent adoptive home is found. We cannot take in birds for whom there is no foster home available. If this situation touches your heart, and if you are able and willing to help, here's what you need to do: take a free bird care class (the schedule and locations of our classes can be found here.); fill out an application and bring it to the class with you (the application is here.). We will contact you for a phone interview and a home visit after that.

Come join us. Help us remove the notice above. Give us the capacity to take in the birds that need our help and support.

FOSTER HOMES DESPERATELY NEEDED!!!

Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization in Northern California. We take in birds that need a safe place to live, rehabilitate them if necessary, and find them good homes. We also try to educate people how to live with companion birds and inform them of the level of care necessary to provide the birds a safe, healthy, permanent home.

Like most animal rescues in the United States, we are currently being asked to take in more birds than ever, including strays and birds surrendered to animal shelters, birds abandoned in houses after their humans move away, and birds whose families can no longer care for them due to unforeseen circumstances. In many cases, birds are brought to us because their families cannot pay for desperately-needed veterinary care.

We want to continue to be able to take in every companion bird that needs our help. But the one essential resource we must have in order to do that is a foster home to care for him or her. Because we have no central facility, no single refuge, our foster homes are the safe places where new birds are cared for. Our supply of foster and adoptive homes has improved a little, but more are needed.

The process for being approved as a foster home is the same as for being approved as an adoptive home. If you would like to foster birds for Mickaboo and help us work through this difficult time, please join us at our next free bird care class. The schedule and locations of all of the classes can be found on our website here. We need bird-loving people who want to change the world - one bird at a time.

If you are having behavior difficulties with your bird please consider contacting us for assistance or attending our next advanced bird behavior class as an alternative to surrendering your bird. Information on the next classes can be found here.

Featured bird: Griffith & Alta
My name is Griffith and I was born into the San Francisco wild flock of conures. I got sick with the neurolgical issues that affect those of us who contract parasites, but I was lucky enough to be found by someone who knew what to do! When he couldn't get me to Mark Bittner, he got in contact with Mickaboo who took me in and rushed me to their vet.

I've been in their care for a while, but with the medicine to kill the parasites and some time to get used to how unstable the damage to my brain has left me, I'm doing pretty well!

My foster mom says I'm very sweet - but now what I need is a forever home to love me! If you think you might be the right home for me, please click on the link for the conure coordinator and let her know!

Alta came into Mickaboo in June also with ... (read more)
