Don’t breed, don’t buy... adopt a rescued bird!

MICKABOO DECLARES COCKATIEL MORATORIUM

Due to the substantial increase in the number of cockatiels coming in to us and the lack of foster homes, Mickaboo has had to temporarily cease accepting cockatiels. Whatever the causes of the increase in surrenders, we are very sorry to have to announce this moratorium. We find this situation appalling and it has us very worried. We are trying various ways to increase our capacity and our supply of foster and adoptive homes, but as of Saturday, July 10, 2010, we must begin turning away cockatiels in need of homes.

FOSTER HOMES DESPERATELY NEEDED!!!

Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization based in Northern California. We take in birds that need a safe place to live, rehabilitate them if necessary, and find them good homes. We also try to educate people how to live with companion birds and inform them of the level of care necessary to provide the birds a safe, healthy, permanent home.

Because we have no central facility, no single refuge, we need a foster home for each bird that we take in. And like most animal rescues in the United States, we are being asked to take a growing number of birds, including strays and birds surrendered to animal shelters, birds abandoned in homes due to foreclosure, and birds whose families can no longer care for them due to unforeseen circumstances. In many cases, birds are brought to us because their families cannot pay for desperately-needed veterinary care.

Our supply of foster and adoptive homes has improved a little, but more are needed. The process for becoming a foster home is the same as for being approved as an adoptive home. If you would like to foster birds for Mickaboo and help us work through this difficult time, please attend our next free bird care class. The schedule and locations of classes is on our website here. We need bird-loving people who want to change the world - one bird at a time.

If you are having behavior difficulties with your bird please consider contacting us for assistance or attending our next advanced bird behavior class as an alternative to surrendering your bird. Information on the next classes can be found here.

Featured bird: Patsy & Thumper
We'd like to introduce ourselves - we are Patsy and Thumper, both nine years old, and we're a bonded male/female pair. This may confuse you somewhat but Thumper, that's me, is a female and Patsy is a male. Now, of course our owners didn't know that when we were named years ago and now we know these as our names and it doesn't bother us one bit that they may not be politically correct! I, Thumper, have had a bit of a health problem lately. I've had a history of egg laying in the past, and just recently my owner found some bloody patches on my backside. A nice lady avian vet examined me just recently though and can't find anything wrong at this time. My foster mom will keep an eye on me though. I also have this weird thing where I have no feathers around my eyes. I look rather like a bare-ey... (read more)
